Braised Steak in Dark Beer

Ingredients

  • 1kg braising steak, cubed
  • 25g/1oz seasoned flour
  • 60ml/4 tbs. oil
  • 6 onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 600ml/1 pint dark beer
  • 15ml/1 tbs. brown sugar

Method

  1. Coat the steak cubes with the seasoned flour.
  2. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the steak cubes, in batches, and brown on all sides. Remove the steak cubes from the pan as they brown.
  3. Add the onions and garlic to the pan and fry gently until softened. Add more oil if necessary.
  4. Return the steak cubes to the pan and stir in the beer and sugar. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for 1½ hours.
  5. Remove the lid and continue simmering for 30 minutes or until the steak cubes are tender. Serve hot.
